Let me do my best to explain this one. If you change JAWS only to work on
another sound card then the headphone jack located in the back/bottom of the
mic is still usable as an output device for the mic audio. If you use Gales
method & go in to windows settings & tell your machine to only use the
default device which you spesify for the whole machine to use which will be
every sound which comes from the machine, then, no, the headphone jack on
the bottom/back of the mic is nolonger usable for output audio from the mic.

thanks for providing an alternative method for fixing the problem.
You say that once you've changed the default playback device back to the
normal playback device, then no more audio is available from the headphone
jack on the microphone. I presume that you can still use this headphone jack
to monitor the microphone input, with the level being controlled by the dial
on the bottom of the microphone?

David is exactly right on this issue. When you plug the 2100 in to your USB
port, it starts acting as a secondary audio device. If you're needing
screen reader audio, you can hook up a pair of headphones to the headphone
jack located just to the right of the Mini USB connector on the back/bottom
of the mic. Then make the changes which David spoke of to get your audio
back in to your speakers. Note, once you change the audio back to your
primary output device. The headphone jack in the back/bottom of the mic
isn't needed anymore & no audio will come from it. The headphone jack was
designed on the mic to allow you to monitor the audio which comes from the
mic. Novel concept except in our screen reader cases. Also, if you plug up
your headphones & hear no audio. Start flicking the volume little button
located under the XLR connection on the back/bottom of the mic. Different
systems cause this button to act different. Meaning that some make a flick
to the right up & left down. Whilst others go the other direction. So,
you'll have to play with it & figure out which way is which on your
particular system. I had the same issue when I first got my mic & am using
an older version of JAWS, had a hell of a time getting this issue worked

Hi Rich,
it appears that when you plug in the usb mic, it may be treating it as the
default playback device.
Obviously, given that you loose audio, this makes it difficult to then go
into playback devices and reset the normal speakers to be default.
Are you using Jaws?
If so then you can specify the output device that Jaws uses. By default it's
set to the default playback device, but you can set it to a specific device,
for example, the speakers/headphones you normally use. If you do this, then
you should still have jaws after plugging in the microphone, and you can
reset the speakers as the default (in the list of playback devices, use the
speakers context menu).
To this, open the Jaws window (insert+j), open the utilities menu, open the
sound cards sub-menu, and choose a device. Note if you don't recognize your
speakers for sure, don't do this, as you'll loose Jaws output completely. In
this case, I think you'll need sighted assistance.
Given that others on the list have recommended this microphone, there may be
other ways they can suggest for fixing this - the above is just my best
guess.

I purchased an Audio Technica ATR 2100 microphone and plugged into a USB
port on my laptop, but the laptop is treating as speakers and cutting
off all audio and I cannot hear sounds or speech, and cannot use the
mike. What do I need to change in Windows to correct this. I am using
Windows 7.
