There is yet another approach being tried out on Linux at present. You'll
(Andrew) be aware of it because of the experimental use you made of
'flatpak' installs. In effect, each item of user software comes with its
own set of dependencies supported in its own 'bubble'. Can't say I like the
idea as it even all else is fine, it bloats the space used for software.
And can sometimes confuse the user when they see more than one version of
something like VLC! 8-]
You perhaps have the advantage that ROOL ROD etc know each other and can
try and standardise/organise at least the approach taken to dealing with
dependencies and avoiding 'dependency hell'. And users can perhaps help
themselves by always using the same method for installing (and removals)
when it comes to system level items. (A distinction being that I also build
or add some things in 'user space' but then accept any dependencies also
may need to be supported at a user level so 'not seen' by system level
installed items. And realise this is at my 'own risk'. :-)
