Personally I've long felt that copyrights should revert to the author
when a company that bought them goes under.

The answer is for authors to ensure when handing over copyright that there
is a clause in the contract stipulating what happens if the company ceases
to exist. I would certainly always do that. I would also try to negotiate
an agreement on what happens if the company decides to cease publication
of the work, though I suspect that would be a tougher job in most cases.

I think we might be getting confused here.

The software clearly did revert to the author, who released it as freeware.

The manual was presumably written by someone else, and we're not sure who
that someone is. This is far from uncommon: consider why there's no manual
(or original manual, at least) for OpenVector, for example.
