Just to clarify. I very much doubt whether it is the drive that CD burn
doesn't like (I've never had much luck with *any* drives, but I know
some folks do). It is possible, but we use standard Samsung or Lite-On
drives which work fine in RISCubes for burning.
One of the problems with CD/DVD writers is that CDBurn needs to have a
series of 'settings' made 'just right' for the hardware. So you get the
effect measurement and test people know as 'lost in space'. i.e. You spend
lots of time changing various combinations of setting values and seeing if
you get a coconut. Bit like playing 12-dimensional 'battleships'. Fun for
Spock, no doubt... 8-]
FWIW I haven't tried writing using the ARMX6's internal drive because I was
put off by the above challenge. Hence my question in case someone had found
the battleship. cf below...
Note that the only two purposes I can think of for using burned CDs are
distributing to friends/family and burning audio CDs. For everything
else, USB sticks/drives or SD cards are much more practical. This
especially holds for data backup. Anything I can do to spread that
message is "a good thing", I feel, as I find people rarely remember/wish
to back up to CD/DVD. Backup is only as good as when it was last done,
and if something is a "hassle", it won't be done.
I sometimes want to post a lot of data to a few people. These days that may
be over a GB. It is cheaper and simpler for me to post burnt discs. As
things stand I put the files on my NAS then burn them using a Linux box.
But doing it on the ARMX6 would be more convenient if it turns out that I
just need to adopt settings someone has found to work.
I don't bother with writing audio CDs any more. More likely to need to do
files as 96k/24 flac. Similarly, I'm more likely to be using Handbrake to
convert DVDs into mkvs than write video DVDs these days.
Afraid I'm out of touch with work on CDBurn.
