Am I right to assume that currently CDBurn does *not* work with this
internal drive, but requires an external one like the TD11RS and adaptor as
described below?
Just to clarify. I very much doubt whether it is the drive that CD burn
doesn't like (I've never had much luck with *any* drives, but I know some
folks do). It is possible, but we use standard Samsung or Lite-On drives
which work fine in RISCubes for burning.
The USB->SATA adapters are different to the slimline ones in ARMiniX.
They are advertised as supporting CDRW drives (and I think DVDRW drives,
but I doubt that matters). However, it is possible that CD burn may not
like those.
But the key thing is, there's no real reason it shouldn't work. HOWEVER,
I refuse to advertise something that I cannot guarantee to work well. And
I can't guarantee CD burning on RISC OS to be pleasurable. Therefore I
advertise the drives as CD/DVD reader drives and that is all. If you have
success writing with them, that's great, but if not...
Note that the only two purposes I can think of for using burned CDs are
distributing to friends/family and burning audio CDs. For everything
else, USB sticks/drives or SD cards are much more practical. This
especially holds for data backup. Anything I can do to spread that
message is "a good thing", I feel, as I find people rarely remember/wish
to back up to CD/DVD. Backup is only as good as when it was last done,
and if something is a "hassle", it won't be done.
My suspicion is that one just needs to create an appropriate USB driver
for the drive (CDburn doesn't seem to work automagically with things), but
that's not something I'm familiar with.
My personal recommendation is to use CDburn to create .iso images of CDs,
then double click them to burn them to disc via slave Windows box. Could
even be "automatic" on a double click via UniPrint/UniServe, although I
tend to save the .iso files to the PC or NAS and burn from there. More
cumbersome, but always gives good discs.
Also note in answer to question about "why would R-Comp supply expensive
DVDRW drives", a better question is "why *wouldn't* they?" when the price
difference is about 3ukp. It would be ludicrous of us not to include
drives with such a capability "just in case" than worry about saving such
a tiny amount of money. I would happily spend even more per drive, but
don't have any evidence that other drives would be different. I'm happy
to be corrected, if anyone has success with 5.25" (full size) DVD writer.
Overall, my advice is "contact Steffen and ask for a recommended drive,
possibly external, known to work well with CDburn via USB". This should
give you "guaranteed" success. I'd be happy to supply test stuff to
Steffen, but don't really have an active, working relationship there.
