It seems the problem was in the printing directory. Restoring the old
directory has cured the problem. Now on Printers 1.85. It seems the new
version of printers should not be copied over the old one. Installing 1.89
on its own works fine.
Copying the apps over themselves isn't a good idea, anyway. User options for
Printers are held in Choices:, so you're fairly safe to delete (or at least
move out of the way) and replace.
