Nothing contradictory here. This can happen if (including but not limited to):

- Display has any "dynamic" functionality enabled (dynamic contrast, auto brightness, etc.)
- "Dynamic" system features like Night Shift, True Tone or other software interfering
- Stray ambient light entering the sensor due to lighting not being consistent (e.g. you switch on/off a bright room light during measurements)
- Monitor defect (unlikely)
- Instrument defect (unlikely)
