I back my stuff always to an external drive, before reinstalling windows for
example.
I just connect the external via usb and then choose the folders I want to
back up. no need for back up programs and to me more efficient than to end
up with a lot of junk I may not really need backed up.

I've heard of a program called casper, at least that's what I think its
called. 
 Don't know much about it though.
