I don't think dropdown menus and combo boxes are the same. I always understood that a dropdown menu was a branch dropping down from a menu item. a combo box and a dropdown list are I think the same. These are part of the main text and not part of a menu system.

Hi,

No, never. In fact, it was quite some time before I realised that drop down menus and combo boxes were the same thing. Are there any other instances we should be aware of, where the screenreader calls a feature by a name that most people don't use in everyday language? Perhaps if there are, we should all be made aware of them.

Best,
Clive

Hello,
Anyone heard of combo boxes said as selection lists?

Hi Steve,

So how could we get developers to make screenreaders say what people usually say, such as 'drop down menu' instead of 'combo boxes'?

Regards,
Clive

Hi,

Actually it isn't. Sighted people don't call them combo boxes, it is only screen readers that call them that, and web standards. Sighted people call them drop downs. You can't expect sighted people to always use jargon that we understand through screen readers. Ask any sighted person what a combo box is and see what you get.

All the best

Steve
