Hi Hazel

I agree the calling quality could be better on some of the latest
Smartphones, but a lot of that depends on reception and signal coverage.

As for using voice dictation, I used it quite a lot when I first got my
iPhone, but I do tend to use the on-screen keyboard now most of the time.
The only occasions where turning on Bluetooth to use my Apple wireless
keyboard is useful is when I want to write something longer.

It took a little time for me to get used to moving my finger across the
screen to hear the letter I wanted, then lift my finger to have that letter
inserted into the text field. The way I grasped it was visualising a raised
keyboard on the screen. The letters are in exactly the same place as they
would be on a tactile keyboard, so you just move your finger to where you
know the letter is you want. You might be slightly out, but listening to
speech as you move your finger helps you to locate it, and that gets quicker
the more you do it.

In an app, you also get used to where certain buttons are that you need to
double-tap. For example, the Dictate button is near the bottom left of the
screen on an iOS device, and the Send button in a text message is just above
the 0, so it does actually get quicker with practice.

It isn't for everybody though, I just want to try to encourage people that
it can be done, and that most of us have felt like making the device part of
the brickwork! (smile).

Kind regards,

Jackie Brown

Jim I have been following this topic and have a few simple questions for
those who are already useing them.
I have sighted friends who use both Galaxy and I phones and report to me
that they don't make good calls, well guess what I use a phone for when
I am on the go? yup calling a taxi or others.
Secondly, do people use the voice activated menus? such as dictating
their text messages.
I saw the Apple phone as I said before and this had a touch keypad at
the bottom but as there was nothing to feel I had no idea which letter I
was useing.
Do people use an external keyboard? if so surely this defeats the Idea
of portable devices if you have to carry this as well.
Sorry for all the questions but really want to know.
Thanks.
