Alexander, Hope that you don't mind me coming in here but I have an idea.  
In Goldwave if you press f11 and then Control Tab twice you are on a 
volume control tab. Now I had always believed that this was just an 
alternative interface to the Windows Volume Control applet.   If I select 
Microphone in the latter it becomes checked in the Gold wave volume 
control - I just checked it!  
But I remembber a Tutorial on BCT recently in which it was suggested that 
the two can get out of "alignment" with each other.   No idea why this 
should happen, but perhaps you might wish to check in GoldWave to make 
sure Microphone is selected.  
A long shot, but frankly I am stumped otherwise.
I changed the Windows Volume control on this system from Line In to 
Microphone this morning and have been happily recording a magazine 
article in Goldwave.
