I agree, and this is another message which would make little sense unless
you had the previous one.
To recap all the previous debate would be tedious and inhibit contribution.

Hello Derek

Some people find top quoting more of a pain to wade through before you reach
the new text. I've seen some posts on other lists where the trimming has
been so ruthless that the message itself makes no sense without reference to
previous messages." You end up with posts like

"Hello,

I find it annoying when people do that so I always avoid it.
Regards,
Fred.
"

That makes as much sense with no context as the famous Prunella Scales phone
call in Fawlty Towers, where her end of the conversation consisted entirely
of repeated: "ooh! Yes! Yes! I know!

Your suggestion of keeping only the message immediately below the one you're
writing seems so obvious, it's brilliant. I've tried it here.

Best,
Clive

Hi Kulvinder
You said

"I would actually leave the message that you are replying to and delete the
rest below that."

Why not quote, and add reply under the quote.
Delete everything else.

So if a list member asks few questions, quote the question, Then add
reply, then quote the next question and then add reply.
