I think if the subject is specific to the body of the text and any further
questions being asked can be left in the message after the reply, such as
below :D

That makes as much sense with no context as the famous Prunella Scales phone
call in Fawlty Towers, where her end of the conversation consisted entirely
of repeated: "ooh! Yes! Yes! I know!

Your suggestion of keeping only the message immediately below the one you're
writing seems so obvious, it's brilliant. I've tried it here.
