Hi

I've stayed out of this for fairly obvious reasons I think. However the
question was asked whether anyone had tested Dragon with JAWS alone, without
any additional technologies.

It has been very necessary for me to test JAWS with Dragon alone, and
accepting for the moment that you were able to train the software so that
the voice profile was at its best, (I suggest this is not possible unless
you use Braille, certainly not to the standard I would like), and assuming
you just wanted to use Dragon for dictation and not computer control, I
would suggest the following points are noteworthy:

1. JAWS does not by default give audible feedback of what has been dictated.
It is necessary to review the text after the event. This is one of the
primary functions of additional technology such as J-Say which echoes back
the dictation when you pause, thereby allowing for immediate corrections to
be made.

2. There is no audible confirmation of the microphone condition, I.E.
whether it is switched on or off.

3. While you can correct text with the keyboard, Dragon does not really
learn by doing this. Optimum results are achieved by using the correction
facility, (where Dragon will store a snapshot of how you say a word or
phrase in its archive), or with J-Say using a facility called "My Words".
This allows you to easily enter commonly used words and phrases, or indeed a
seeing friend or family member could help with this. Just by using JAWS
alone, access to the correction box, while just about usable, is somewhat
primitive and
JAWS delivers lots of extraneous speech you do not need.

4. The Microsoft Word spell check is of very limited value indeed. Clearly,
every word which Dragon understands will be a complete word. The meaning
may not be as you intend it to be, although the accuracy is almost perfect
with a Dragon V9 profile which has been trained correctly in the first
instance, but you will get complete words in the document. Therefore, the
Word spell check facility is unlikely to flag up words which are misspelled
because there will not be many of them.

5. It was suggested that correcting text segments could be somewhat tiresome
and laborious using the human voice. This undoubtedly is the case if JAWS
is used with Dragon alone, but is certainly not the case with additional
technology.

Now let me address the question of Hal and Supernova with Dragon.

Steve Nutt is correct in saying that there used to be a product entitled
NovaLink, which did provide the necessary audible feedback so that one could
use the less expensive dragon products with Hal or Supernova. This product
has been discontinued, because, as we have publicly said, the market
frankly is dictating that this kind of product is not what people want. As
a company, we are actively investigating the possibility of producing a
product for Hal or Supernova which gives complete hands free control of the
computer and which, in addition, delivers natural speech output. There is
no point in talking to the computer naturally if you are just going to
receive unnecessary or irrelevant speech back. The language which you
receive back must also be natural.

At the moment, it would appear that Hal and Supernova do not contain all the
capabilities which we would like them to have in terms of configuration.
However, Dolphin are actively working with us to hopefully resolve these
issues.

I hope that clarifies things a little. As Terry has suggested, it is very
likely that Windows Vista's speech recognition facility will, in time,
provide voice recognition capabilities to those people who purely want the
ability to dictate text and, being it is bundled with the operating system,
seems very attractive. For technical reasons
however, which I shall not go into right now, even this still has some way
to go in terms of development. I would draw your attention to the
Knowbrainer voice recognition forum at
www.knowbrainer.com
which I view on almost a daily basis, which has discussed this speech engine
in great detail. Searching through the archives will deliver such
information to you.

If I can assist further in this area, please feel free to let me know.
