I don't have Vista immediately to hand but there is possibly a checkbox in the sound devices dialog box in control panel which says something like 'use only default device'. Make sure that is not ticked.

What version of Windows are you running?

    Hi Paul -
I'm still getting JAWS and Windows sounds through my laptop
speakers. The problem is when I plug in my USB sound card.
There are no controls [volume etc] on the physical sound card, so
nothing to tweak from that side of things, and I'm unable to look
at tweaking anything when the sound card is connected to the
laptop, because as soon as it is, the speakers cut out, and
    nothing comes through the headphones.
When I look at play back devices, under volume, I have 18 entries
in there, a couple are for Realtek high definition [working] and
Realtek digital output, high definition [working]. after these
two, that come at the top of the list, there are 16 entries all
saying the same thing: Speakers SNDTAudio [working]
My SoundBlaster card isn't showing in there at the moment,
because I have unplugged it, in order to hear the laptop
speakers. I don't know if I should make any of the other speaker
entries in that SNDTAudio list my default. I don't know what the
default should be, or indeed what it is, when the sound card is
disconnected. If I could get back to that, then at least I'd be
able to plug the sound card in, and take a look at it under
devices, as it wouldn't cut the speakers out, if it were no
longer set as the default. Any more ideas?
    Thanks -
    Andy

        Hi Andy,

It seems that there might be something wrong with your sound
card or maybe you have altered a setting on it without
noticing which has made it temporarily incompatible. Approaching your problem from this angle makes sense of
everything you say in your post.

If you can switch your default audio player back to the
Windows default, you should get Jaws and Windows audio
through your laptop speakers. That would show that there is
nothing wrong with your default multimedia setup.

Once you have that reinstated, if you find again that there
is no sound from your sound card when you switch the default
playback device to the SoundBlaster card, then tweak any
relevant settings on the external device and see if you get a
        result.

        Hi all -
I have JAWS working ok through my laptop speakers, but I
like To use an external soundcard with headphones. All had
been working ok, until this morning.
I couldn't get any sound through my sound card, so had a
look around to see if I could sort it!
From the JAWS utilities menu, under sound cards, Windows
default sound card is checked. So, I left that alone, and
went to the system tray, opened up the play back devices
from within volume, and found the name of my
external SoundBlaster card, and set it as the default sound
card. And that seems to be my mistake, as now, when I boot
up the laptop, if the external sound card isn't connected,
JAWS speaks to me, but as soon as I plug the USB sound card
in, sound is lost, not just JAWS, but all sound, and I have
to take the sound card out, and reboot. And of course, if I
boot up with the sound card connected, I get no sound at all
Anybody help me to sort this one please? -
        Andy
