Hi Andy,
It seems that there might be something wrong with your sound card or
maybe you have altered a setting on it without noticing which has made
it temporarily incompatible. Approaching your problem from this angle
makes sense of everything you say in your post.
If you can switch your default audio player back to the Windows default,
you should get Jaws and Windows audio through your laptop speakers.
That would show that there is nothing wrong with your default multimedia
setup.
Once you have that reinstated, if you find again that there is no sound
from your sound card when you switch the default playback device to the
SoundBlaster card, then tweak any relevant settings on the external
device and see if you get a result.

but as soon as I plug the USB sound card in, sound is lost, not
just JAWS, but all sound, and I have to take the sound card out, and
