Hi Mike -

I'm with T-Mobile, and if I understand their policy, I think when I open Safari when abroad, I will be offered the chance to by a T-Mobile booster [10 quid for 50mg of data] so hopefully that will avoid roaming charges? I assume I'll still have to keep roaming on for T-Mobile to see where I am in the world? I never quite understand why the iPhone has a button to turn on/off mobile data, as well as one for roaming, unless the first is about being in one's home country, and the second for abroad? -

Hi Andy,

If you want roaming on, then as the data flows, the dosh will flow. It's
down to managing your data as I said earlier.

Mike - I said I'll want roaming on at times deliberately, because there will be times when wi-fi is not available, if it were available to me all of the
time, then I wouldn't be bothered about data downloading without my
knowledge -

Hi,

Stick to accessing when free wi-fi is available; I assume you can disable
the social networks in the notification settings area.

Hth,

Hi Steve and all -

So, when I next go abroad with my iPhone, I'll want roaming on at times,
so
how can I be sure that twitter and podcasts don't download? It appears
with
the iPhone the apps are closed until they are double tapped and they open,
but is pressing the home button for the home screen, enough to close the
app
and prevent sneaky downloads? -

Hi,

Simple. She had her phone set for roaming, and it did what it was
told.

If you have apps running in the background, like podcast clients, or
Facebook even, or Twitter, they are all downloading.

All the best

Steve

Hi all -

There was a thing on Money Box this week about a loyer who ran up a
bill with T-Mobile, for £750 when in Australia, because her phone was
downloading data without her being aware of it. I was left wondering how
this might happen? Anybody know? -
