Hi Darran, Just adding to what others have said: A Megabyte is equal to 1,048,576 bytes; however, the IEC defines that one MB is equal to 1,000,000 bytes. Therefore, a MB could really equal either of these values. Unfortunately the software industry uses the higher figure, while disk drive manufacturers use the lower. That's one reason. The other is that when you format a drive, a certain amount of space is allocated to creating a File Allocation Table. In very simple layman's terms, this is like a table of contents of the disk drive. The larger the disk drive, the larger the Table, which in turn has to be deducted from the available storage capacity. And of course when you check for available space, not only does the program use the higher figure, it deducts the space being used for the table. I've just bought and connected a new Maxtor 400GB external hard drive, and found to my confusion - it must be said - that on checking its properties after installing, it only showed as having a capacity of 372GB, 28GB short! Can anyone offer any kind of explanation as to where my missing 28GB may have gone? Surely a drop of 28GB is a little on the large side? Regards.
