Hi Barbra.

Are your speakers the kind that have a detachable cable going in to the back?  
If so, you might be able to solve the problem by replacing the cable.  If 
however the wire is fixed then it might be time to consider replacing them.  
I'd still try plugging the speakers in to a handy external device just to 
double check.

  Checking with a pair of headphones and my mobile phone, I have discovered 
that the problem is with my speakers and not the PC sound card. Now, does this 
simply mean the speakers are past their best or is there anything else I can do?
