Are you totally blind? If so, and you need to hear the bus driver call the
stops or stop at which you need to get off when you are going somewhere you
might want to read a brail magazine or book rather than to listen to one
while riding. When someone gives you an address or telephone number you
might find it an easier and les expensive thing to carry a pocket slate and
index cards to write whatever number
or e-mail address is given. also A slate by the phone is nice to take
down messages as well. Labeling products and devices is more easily
accomplished if one can read Braille. If you have some usable vision it may
be easier to read Braille rather than straining your eyes trying with
varying success to read print of different sizes. I have known those who
have put their faces on things in order to read them. Being with them at
these times is embarrassing for me. Basically there is the pride which
comes from being literate. I know now days people are still trying to say
those who read and write using means other than literally reading and
writing are also literate. I grew up during a time when this wasn't so, and
if you couldn't read and write you were illiterate. ----- Original
