I don't know which phone you are using, but if it's an IPhone There is lots of
useful information about how much mobile data you are using if you go to
settings and then Mobile Data.

You don't necessarily have to turn Voiceover off, you could just turn speech
off using a tripple finger double tap. Repeat the tripple finger double tap to
turn speech on again.

I tried it this afternoon in the car. First it didn̢۪t work at all and then I
realised that I I have my Iphone settings to WIFI only. Once I adjusted this,
then it worked very well, telling me about significant streets, buildings and
bus stops we were passing – although not all!
So far, I̢۪m very pleased with it. The real improvement nt which I feel could
be made is that sometimes Voiceover is still talking when the app is giving
information. Perhaps a moment̢۪s delay to allow for voiceover to stop op
would be helpful.
