Andy

You need to tackle this through an elimination process. Let's start again. Fire up your laptop and connect via wireless. Open a command prompt and type in ipconfig /all. Note what the ip address is, if it is in the router range then this is not the problem. If it isn't then change it to a static ip using the info I've sent already. If it now works then this is the problem. To change back to dynamic ip addressing so you can use your laptop on other networks you would then need to investigate the routers wireless settings as this may be due to it not having dhcp enabled, but try the static change first.

As the laptop works when hard-wired this is probably that dhcp is enabled for the router ports but not wireless.

Don't know re the heat of your router.

You might want to continue this off list so as not to bombard it with all this. Contact me on dudleym@xxxxxxxxxxxx

I've got company coming this weekend and will be going off-line pretty soon so won't be able to pick this up again until late Sunday/Monday

Connect to the router

Andy Collins recently said:-

Hi Martin

I'm not disputing what you tell me, just trying to understand, so I wonder
why if I need to turn on admin rites and set the IP address on the laptop,
why I don't get that kind of message, instead of the one that just says
"connected with limited access"? Obviously it is the limited access that is
denying the laptop's connection to the internet.

Sorry If I'm not too clear, but what I was trying to say, was that my PC is
hard wired, and the laptop wirleess, so yes, I am using the PC to send these
emails; what I did just to see what would happen, was to make the laptop
wired, by plugging the Ethernet cable in to it, instead of the PC, this way,
I was able to get access to the internet, so doesn't that mean the IP
address is already established on the laptop?

Regarding IP addresses, you said in an earlier post that I would need to set
the IP on the laptop to the next number up from the IP on the PC, i.e.
192.168.0.2 or similar, and what I was queerying about hotspots was that if
I was in a bar that offered connectivity, would I need to know their IP
address in order to set the laptop IP address in sequence to it?

Insidentally, is it normal for a router to feel what I would call hot or
very warm, rather than just warm? -

Thanks - Andy

| What I am saying is that you will need administrator rights to set the ip
| address and if you can't see where to change them then you probably dont
| have the rights to do so and this section would be hidden. Enableing admin
| rights should sort this out but you will need to follow the instructions
to
| checkand amend if required. Once you have set the ip etc and can connect
| via wireless you can then go back and disable admin rights.
|
| Don't know what you mean about hotspots, if your router is in range of the
| laptop it doesn't matter where it is.
|
| I'm confused as to what you mean over connecting to the network. Does the
| PC work over the network, if you're using it for these e-mails then
| obviously yes, but you may not be. If it is the laptop that doesn't
| connect then I'm assuming you mean when it is hard-wired, you won't need
| this if you get the wireless up and running but in the meantime try
| switching off the router for a moment or two, turn off the PC reboot the
| laptop and try again.
