Hi.
Thanks for the tips and ideas.

Nobody has suggested antivirus so is AVG sufficient?  No need to buy or try 
NOD32?

I agree reformatting is over the top but I don't think the Dell engineer will 
get the laptop working without I shall ask though as obviously don't want to 
lose everything if it can be avoided.
