The Kindle have both hardware and software incarnations. The latter is
completely free and has some speech commands built in to allow reading of book
material. Not all book material however can be read by the TTS however as for
some publications it can be disabled. You can normally check before purchasing
a title that it has TTS enabled for it. The hardware unit has speech and even
something like a basic screen reader, however this is not turned on by default.
The hardware units start at about £111 and can be obtained directly through
Amazon and some high street outlets including Tescos.

I am sure others will be able to fill in the detail.

Hello all,

I'm in the same boat, and would like to know what is a Kindle and how
much is it? Is it hardware or software?

Best,
Clive

Subject: [access-uk] Kindle accessibility

Hi All,

Have been off list for a long while and can't get on with list archive
easily so apologies if this has been covered on list before but I am
really interested in getting a Kindle but wondering what comments /
experiences others on list have of using one, tips and tricks and
generally anything else I might want to consider before finally making a
purchase.

Please feel free to respond off-list if you want.

Many thanks,

Phil
