Thanks for the help. Option-3 does the job; I think I’d pressed Command-3
instead, so no wonder I was confused. George, the key you mentioned reports
Vertical Line on my keyboard.

As Eleanor has said, if upper case 3 is giving you the pound (sterling)
symbol, option 3 will give you a hash, which Voiceover will render as
"number".
There are a couple of different UK keyboards available, including UK PC,
which might explain some of the differences.
