In Firefox go to the View menu and then the Sidebar sub menu.
Press enter on the items checked in there and the side bar items should
disappear.
You may have to return to the same nenu twice if you have more than one set of
sidebars checked.

I sometimes have to use Firefox instead of my preferred IE11. Yesterday I did
just this and now have a box down the left side of the screen something to do
with history. I can’t work out how to remove this so help would be much
appreciated.
