Yes Ian, I appreciate that. I do not know if Pure will take up the challenge, but it strikes me that their range of gear - tuners and radios - would be a good choice for reasons already stated. The tuners from this firm are particularly good in that they have 99 presets. Very quick thoughts on priorities: 1. Feedback voice to be separate from audio output of tuner - separate speaker. 2. Ability to turn on/off information voice. 3. Anouncment of station name. 4. Anoucement of scrolling info. i.e. name of music or prgram going out if available. Maybe some audible confirmation that scvanning is in progress when setting up or rescanning. Would be very useful if speech output could anouncce what new stations have been found. Sure I haven't been very thorough here, but I'm in a hurry. I would hope that, eventually, a generic solution or interface=20 will be arrived at whereby any DAB set could have an optional=20 speech module addeed for accessability. Just a pitty there is=20 always change and pointless format wars in things like sim cards=20 and so on. So, just for the record, I'd go with the Pure II, if it has to be=20 one set only that's going to set an example. However a better criteria might be how willing such=20 a manufacturer would be to at least assist in co-development of=20 such a product, and also whether the guts of the radio can be relatively=20 easily adapted as you would have to be tapping in to the registers of=20 the microprocessor or lines to the display to intercept this=20 information, it's usually a case of knowing how they code for the display. Finally=20 you would consider what percentage of the total unit cost adding the speech=20 is going to run to. In consumer electronics terms about 30 percent would=20 at a rough guess be the ceiling so you're looking at a talking chipset=20 costing between from =A35 to =A315 per unit. I would suggest that whatever speech functionality is specified=20 should be quite simple and basic as a proof of concept to start with.=20 Manufacturers will become reluctant if things get too complicated. I think=20 that's what put Roberts off producint a similar proof of concept some years=20 ago on this matter. Hope it goes well. Regards. As for the conflict, there needs to be a speech=20 menu where you can control the speech by switching on or off particular=20 features. One item would need to control if the speech blocked the radio while in=20 progress or was simultaneous. Then, the user, not the manufacturer could=20 decide. The evoke 2 has dab and fm presets, good sound, good reception,=20 is portable and can, if you really want to, be wired to a hifi. Indeed, if anyone feels=20 impelled to pass this on to the DAB list, feel entirely free. Anyone=20 should also feel free about responding to me privately as my aim is to canvas=20 views as well as stimulate discussion. I'm in very preliminary discussions with a rep from a DAB=20 manufacturer about the possibility of producing a DAB radio with speech.=20 That's to say, he's asked me the initial question, would a talking radio be=20 a good idea? Naturally I've immediately replied that it would very much=20 indeed be a good thing. So, following that up, could people think about=20 the following. Is there one set currently available from any manufacturer that=20 people would like to see adapted for speech output? Which functions would you prioritise as being accessible through=20 speech? For example, would people prefer to have station identification available= over Radiotext? How would people feel about potential conflicts between station=20 output and speech information? Any other comments, suggestions very much welcome, particularly=20 in the spirit that they seem up for this. Look forward to hearing from you. Cheers now.
