My favorite trick in that case is to mount it as a slave drive in a working machine.

Tell us what happens. I had an XP box that would not boot, and tried
everything I could think of (Linux boot with samba, recovery console,

Micro, and found a nasty virus/worm that makes machine unbootable. Recovered
all data, but could never get it to boot. Had to build a new boot drive. Many
miserable hours of work, and serves me right for skimping on security software
and backups.

In my experience the documents and settings folder is retained and duplicate
usernames get modified folder names for their settings, ie Administrator Administrator.domain Administrator.001

etc

Hi all, I've got a PC that won't boot. If I put in the MS W2K CD, it won't repair. So the question is, if I re-install, will it destroy the Documents & Settings directory, or does it just deal with the WINNT folder? -George
