My favorite trick in that case is to mount it as a slave drive in a

Scanned drive with Trend Micro, and found a nasty virus/worm that makes machine unbootable. Recovered all data, but could never get it to boot. Had to build a new boot drive. In my experience the documents and settings folder is retained and duplicate
usernames get modified folder names for their settings, ie Administrator Administrator.domain Administrator.001
etc
