Tim,

Sorry I haven't had time to beta test the surface reader as you are
developing it, but I have been following this thread.

I do agree with (the other) Peter about the wording being a bit confusing.
I was never sure whether I was setting inputs or outputs or to what in the
original MDR Lite program. If that can be made more clear in a future
update, that would be great.

Actually, what happened for me was that once I got it right, I just kept
things there - so it only took a bit of experimenting. Unfortunately, every
once in a while things seemed to get out of sync again (maybe turning on USB
devices in a different order or something) and then I would have to go
through the process again.

But at least once one gets it functioning, these are great tools.

Keep up the great work. There are lots of us out here who appreciate it.

Also, as I mentioned before, let me know when you'd like to be interviewed
about the Surface Reader for our ViewPoints radio show / podcast and we can
set something up with some demos and explanations.

Hi Peter,

This wording has plagued me throughout this project and its predecessor, so
I definitely appreciate where you're coming from. I re-used the original
dialog boxes from the original Mackie Display Reader because they were
already a proven component, but there's definitely merit in considering a
4-list version as you've suggested. This might have to come in an update
after we've got this version out, given the available (lack) of time.

Best wishes.

Subject: [visurfacereader] Display MIDI setup

Hi All,

This is a tentative suggestion for a change to the add-surface dialogue.

I was confused by the button called "Display MIDI setup". I first
thought that it meant "show MIDI set-up", which seems like an easy
mistake that might cause confusion to others. I think I now
understand that it actually means set up MIDI for the surface
display. The distinction between hardware setup and display setup
is not very clear.

My solution would be this: instead of having two buttons, put the
set-up process in a single dialogue with four selections, which, if
I've understood this right, I'd call:
1. Output from Control Surface
2. input to Surface Reader
3. from SR to Music app.
4. From music app back to Control surface.

This might also help clarify the circuit. I may have this all
wrong, as it isn't clear to me whether SR can take output from the
music app as well as from the surface. If my circuit is right, then
it can't, but is it? and the names might be improved, but what do you
think?

Best,

Peter
