Right on Gerry, the iPad has no advantage over a laptop in my opinion outwith the Apple App store and all the various applications that offers, and perhaps its portability. I would definitely go with a laptop for taking notes and / or doing any Microsoft Word / Office related work. I am yet to find a good, accessible Office-type app for the iPad. In general the accessible word-processing programmes for the iPad are simple note-taking apps similar to Notepad on the PC. For a student the only real option is the laptop, and it will be for quite a while. For instance, If you were using either to do school work i.e. take notes during class or do home work using the equivelant of ms wored etc, the laptop would be your preference ? I know what you mean, I prefer to use the desktop pc over the laptop as I'm so used to the standard keyboard of the dsktop I forget the hot keys for jaws on the laptop and more importantly I forget to cover the cursor cell and the shadow of my hand tends to shift focus from the program I'm using to the program that is running similteneously. If I need to do anything that involves a considerable amount of writing, or doing online purchases, I'll reach for the laptop. I do have a bluetooth keyboard for the iPad which in effect turns it into a mini-laptop, however I still find that it's not quite as efficient as using the real thing. Using apps generally works fine, however I find navigating websites to be a bit of a chalenge, and very time-consuming. Perhaps I need to force myself to use it more - reaching for the laptop is the easy way out and what I'm used to. Old habbits die hard and all that... for a blind person I would say that there's no real advantage to having the iPad over the iPhone - the iPad is just an iPhone without the phone and with a bigger screen. I would advise going for one or the other (the iPhone would be my recommendation because of its portability), however for doing anything really productive I would suggest that you'll still need the good old laptop. Hope this helps, Ciaran ________________________________ From: vicsireland-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:vicsireland-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of GERARD SHANAHAN Sent: 22 November 2012 22:28 To: vicsireland@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [vicsireland] laptop or I pad A friend recently showed me the versitility of the I pad and visually impaired in schools came up so I was wondering from people on the list, what would an Ipad have over using alaptop with jaws on it. Both can be used for writing assignments, both can be used for going on the net and email but you can't print directly from an i pad, but then of course you can operate a wireless printer from an i pad can't you? I suppose the price is the only thing, An i pad is about 500 euros where a laptop and jaws would come in a bit dearer so which has the upper hand overall? all comments Gerry ________________________________ I am using the Free version of SPAMfighter<http://www.spamfighter.com/len>.
