Could you try reinstalling ms office, and waiting to be prompted to carry
out a "detect and repair ?"

Maureen,

it's time for you to call for the old standby, sighted assistant, to tell
you what's on the screen when you try to select a word or words in Ms Word.
Perhaps the mouse is coming a cropper somewhere? Perhaps JAWS is
misrepresenting things or getting in the way? (there may be other things
going on, whose symptoms have not manifested themselves to you yet. In the
meantime, let us know if the problem is mysteriously solved!)

(You could, for experiment, unload JAWS, select a few words - say four or
five shift-ctrl-right-arrow presses - then cut to clipboard, hit enter a few

times, paste, then reload JAWS; see if JAWS reads anything pasted.)

Flor, I had checked this option and checkbox is checked. However, I
unchecked it and rechecked it again but no joy - a bit of a mistery, don't
you think?

  maureen,

In Microsoft Word, when you get to Tools Option, ctrl+tab to the Edit tab
control. Now, tab into this diallogue and look at the various options.
About ten tab presses in, there's "automatically select entire word"
(checkbox checked), or should be checked. When I unchecked it, it did not
stop my ability to select words, however.

Also, note: you can access the "What's this?" Help for each option, by
activating shift+F1, to learn more about what it does. (This particular
doesn't work in later office versions.) When you have read this help and
press escape, you're returned to the OK button; so you need to tab or
back-tab to where you were if you want to pursue those tabs.

Flor, I did nothing out of the ordinary that I know. I did put a
favorites
shortcut on desktop. All features you asked about seem o.k. although it
is
difficult to know with the underline and emboldent features, not being
able
to highlight the word. If I put on the underline or emboldent at
beginning
of word and arrow down to end of that word it works alright. Otherwise, F8
and ctrl and down arrow are both working.
Sleep on it, you might get inspiration during the night! Come on all you
teckys, give Flor a dig out on this one!
  Maureen.

Right. So there's nothing 'fatally wrong'. Did you re-assign any keys
recently? use any fomplex Excel functionalities? Can you press ctrl+e
  and
get Centred text; ctrl+l and get left Aligned, Ctrl+b for Bold, ctrl+u
for
Underlined, etc.? And if (In Microsoft word, of course here) you press
ctrlk-down-arrow, does JAWS read by paragraph. Does something happen
(for
example) if you press the control plus shift keys a few times in
successsion? You see there are still a number of possibilities... so to
narrow it all down you will have to *keep* your own hat on!, if you want
  to
solve this problem! (By default, the 'keyboard switching' key is
  alt-shift
(or at least it is on my keyboard. You might have changed that to
control-shift accidentally perhaps.) Did you? Is mouse selection of a
  word
working properly? Do you know that the F8 key is also a selection key,
  and
does that work with ctrl, and ctrl and shift?

You could look in Tools Options - alt+t o. In the General Tab control,
be
sure that both checkboxes for WordPerfect users are unchecked. Next
  there's
the Edit tab to look into, though nothing there in particular springs
out
  at
me from your description of the problem so far. I should add that I'm
  using
office 2002, next up from 2000. Perhaps somebody else has the
  Quicksilver?

Hi Flor, yes, the control key works when selecting a word in both
notepad
    and wordpad.

Outside of Microsoft Office? Outside of Microsoft word? Does your
ctrl
    key
work when selecting, copying/cutting/pasting text in, say, Notepad, or
      WordPad?

Flor, no joy on that front, you will have to put your thinking hat on
    again!

have you rebooted your computer since this problem manifested? If
  not,
reboot ASAP and your ctrl key may well start to work as intended.

Hello Vicsonians, I am using XP Pro with Office 2000 and find that
  when
    I
      go
to select a word JAWS just says "selected but does not say the word
  and
    on
copying word or words, as the case may be, JAWS then tells me
"nothing
selected". Selection line by line or letter by letter seems fine.
  Can
        anybody help?

        Maureen."
