Outside of Microsoft Office? Outside of Microsoft word? Does your ctrl key
work when selecting, copying/cutting/pasting text in, say, Notepad, or
WordPad?

have you rebooted your computer since this problem manifested? If not,
reboot ASAP and your ctrl key may well start to work as intended.

to select a word JAWS just says "selected but does not say the word and on
copying word or words, as the case may be, JAWS then tells me "nothing
selected". Selection line by line or letter by letter seems fine. Can
