April 21, 2007 Soddy Mountain, Walden's Ridge Hamilton Co, TN Harold Birch and I manned the hawk lookout on Saturday. It was a beautiful day and a great one for migrant raptors. He arrived at 0930 while I got there at 1100. We stayed until 1500. Below is a total of what I saw while there. In many cases more birds were seen but, it's bad luck to count them on the lookout so I'm not sure what Harold saw before I got there! Broad-winged Hawk - 23 Red-shouldered Hawk - 1 Osprey - 5 (4 in a 10 minute period) Sharp-shinned Hawk - 2 Cooper's Hawk - 1 Northern Harrier - 1 Bald Eagle - 1 immature, 2 adults Conditions: Temperature 52 - 77 F. Relative Humidity 80% - 33% Wind Direction Calm - North @4 Barometric Pressure 30.29 - 30.23 Visibility 15 K. Hazy - 30 Kilometers Clear Cloud cover 0% - 8% Time 0930 - 1500 Spring Hawk Watching will be over in less than 2 weeks. Not much coverage has happened this year due to other activities, weather and working for a living. Directions: From Chattanooga take Hwy. 24 north for about 20 miles until you come to the Hwy.111 split; take 111 to the top of the mountain; exit and turn left onto Jones Gap Rd., go about 3 miles; Jones Gap will make a hard left (do not continue on Burchard Rd.); go one-half mile to dead end; park and walk up small embankment.
