Hamilton County TN.
Today was the best day of this season for hawk watchers at Soddy Mountain!
Counters in order of arrival as best as I remember: Bill Haley, Roi & Debbie
Shannon, Cynthia & Jimmy Wilkerson, Doug Geren, Lenny & Lee Anne Kafka, Jim
Rowell and Janice & Carl Chadwell.
592 Broad-wings were observed today (up until 4 PM when I had to leave) while
389 Broad-wings were counted on Saturday. We had a kettle of 150 so close we
had to put our binoculars down in order to count them! Other birds sighted
were 1 Cooper's hawk, 2 countable Red-tails, 1 countable Red-shouldered, 3 Bald
Eagles (2 Immature and 1 Adult), 1 Osprey and 1 MERLIN.
Next week is approaching PEAK WEEK for our watch. Next Saturday the 25th.
the Chattanooga TOS will hold their field trip at the hawk watch. Everyone is
invited!
Directions. From downtown Chattanooga take Hwy. 27. After crossing the
Tennessee River travel for 20 to 25 minutes. Just as you pass Soddy Lake take
the left fork (Hwy.111) to the top of the mountain. At the top of the mountain
get off at the first exit...Jones Gap Road. Turn left crossing the bridge.
In less than 2 miles you will go through a small series of "S" curves. As you
come out of the curves look for Jones Gap Rd. to make a sharp left as if
turning onto another road. Drive another .02 miles to the dead end. Walk up
the
bank and you are there.
Bring a chair, water, hat, binoculars, something to eat, sun screen and a
lots of humorous stories (we desperately need some new material).
From all of us to all of you: CONGRATULATIONS TO MENDOTA FOR AN EXCELLENT
DAY!
Jimmy Wilkerson
