Sightings Report 20 & 21 April, Short Springs & Radnor Lk Natural Areas
(Greater Nashville Area)
Location: TN Short Springs St Nat Area, Coffee County

Observation date: 4/20/07, 1-445pm

Notes: Day one of our hiking trip to the greater Nashville area. This
day hike up and down the ravines in this natural area wore us out. Not much
bird life in the treetops which showed considerable frost damage. My wife
Sharon spotted the two best birds of the day: a male Scarlett Tanager in
brilliant breeding plumage and a Hooded Warbler who I finally coaxed into
camera range. Most birds seen were down by the water where we enjoyed the
waterfalls at Busby Falls and Machine Falls. The trail to Adams Falls
provided us the views of the colorful birds and several others as our only
canopy birds. Adams Falls had a dry creek bed. Warning: This is not an easy
hike as we found out, it's rated moderate (Hiking Guide: "60 Hikes within 60
miles-Nashville") but was pushing difficult due to the number of ravines to
go up & down. Still a great hike, the waterfalls were the target for the day
and the birding was extra. Early morning may prove better at this location.

Notes: First time visit to Radnor. My wife Sharon and I traveled to the
Nashville area this weekend for some hiking (I get to bird a little as long
as I don't slow her down.) Luckily it was the second day of hiking and
yesterday was in the hills so we took it slow today. Lots of Yellow Rumps
dashing about, Cardinals and Car. Wrens singing away. Overall a great hike
in beautiful weather. Note to self: Early is better-this park gets busy with
hikers/walkers and family outings.
