I haven't tried it with FreeDOS but if someone wants to have a go......
Think of the ghost image as training materials ;-)

I have a complete DOS client setup in Ghost format. It's about 6MB in =
total but zips to 2MB. It supports a number of common (to us) network =
cards but it's easy to add others as long as you have the .dos driver =
file.
I'd be happy to forward it to anyone that would like to take a look.

We use DOS and publish a desktop. Have 3 MF servers and 100 clients. Use
all the older PCs. This works well for our shop floor production

And so do all thin clients....point being you need something to boot the
machine whether it is linux or ms or a proprietary one. There is no way
around this.

With the exception of ThinStation, it looks like all the free ones

that page require an underlying Windows operating system.
