Then if you have one nameserver hosting both, and you use nslookup,
you'll be able to get it to return all the zones it is a nameserver for,
and all the *nameservers* *it* knows about.

Doesn't matter. If it (the DNS server) knows it, or other DNS servers as
nameservers, you can get it to list them.

Something is broken.

If you can't list the ns records actually on the nameserver for the
domain / zone - something is wrong.

As above - something is wrong, here.

You should be able to list the ns records within the current zone -
otherwise, how else would DNS know?
