[THIN] Re: OFF TOPIC - about Name Servers

Sub-domains yes... absolutely you're right. Since I am top-level for
netsourceit.com I can delegate SOA for any sub-domain x.netsourceit.com.
No doubt about that.

Maybe I just wasn't being clear what I meant. Let me try to rephrase it
somewhat...

What if I'm hosting say... two domains called:

Netsourceit.com
Runswithscissors.net

Where one is obviously not a sub-domain of the other.

How do I use ls -t to display that?

BTW, here is my output. I tried 3 different name servers just to be
sure:

> server ns1.netsourceit.com
Default Server: ns1.netsourceit.com
Address: 66.181.72.193
> ls -t ns ns1.netsourceit.com
[ns1.netsourceit.com]
*** Can't list domain ns1.netsourceit.com: Non-existent domain

> server ns1.apk.net
Default Server: ns1.apk.net
Address: 207.54.159.2
> ls -t ns ns1.apk.net
[ns1.apk.net]
*** Can't list domain ns1.apk.net: BAD ERROR VALUE

> server ns1.lightstream.net
Default Server: ns1.lightstream.net
Address: 216.130.0.2
> ls -t ns ns1.lightstream.net

I wasn't getting offensive, merely pointing out for the second time,
against a rebuttal that it is possible.

There's no magic, here - if you have a DNS hierarchy, you tell it, by
means of configuration, what it is responsible for. SOA records tell it
where the start of authority is, for a zone, and NS records tell it
which nameservers are authoritative for zones.

Therefore for your own DNS zone, if you want to find out all the *zones*
that you host, listing the NS records will effectively tell you.

What do *you* get when you run ls -t ns ns1.netsourceit.com?

Does it tell you all the nameservers and respective zones?

When I run it on my multi-level, DNS zones, from the top of what my
servers are authoritative for it tells me *all* the subzones that *it*
knows about. And that's all *it* ie the DNS server hosts.

Everything else, get's passed on to other nameservers.

So if you have a particular DNS server in mind, or a zone, you can tell
exactly what *it* is responsible for - and also where it will pass on to
other zones / nameservers.
