Shamus Way back when I first started (a couple of hundred years ago- or feels like it anyway) we had two such installations. Nothing but problems - and we have never considered such an operation since, although we have a few sites with part time signals at roundabouts. I have to ask the question - are the signals configured and operating correctly? If fully VA, surely any delays will only occur during periods of heavier flow, when they would be needed anyway? You mention these do not have pedestrian facilities, but I bet many use the signals to cross the road. Switch the signals off and all would be left in the dark (sorry). You are right about the road markings. Imagine the situation with stop lines but no signals. How would you determine when the signals switch on and off? Timeswitch or queue loops? The first would not accommodate unusual peak times and the second will cause problems in the event of a loop fault placing a permanent demand, such as one of our roundabout sites at present. My advice? - although I cannot find any definitive statement, resist such a move. Martin Cassini has a lot to answer for. There may be questions asked, but I would lay odds there would be more complaints should the permanent signals be put on part time operation. "Giles, Shamus (Capita Symonds)" <shamus.giles@cap To ita.co.uk> <tcug@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent by: cc tcug-bounce@freel ists.org Subject [TCUG] Part-time signals at priority junctions (not 17/07/08 12:51 roundabouts) Please respond to tcug@xxxxxxxxxxxx g We have a number of junctions which were priority T-junctions which have been signalised due to residential developments. The question has been asked, can these junctionswithout ped facilities)be reconfigured to run part-time The reasons given are a bitvague but there is a feeling that the signals cause unnecessary delay when not too busy, butis more to do with a general backlash against the proliferation of signals I think. Obviously, the road markings, signs, visibility etc would have to be checked/added. I cannot find definitive advice on the matter, but it sounds dangerous/confusing.Anybody with experience of this sort of junction operation?
