Just pondering accents, would a gentle Welsh accent help? I suspect if I continue down this road with more examples, I am likely to be refused access to this service in future! Good one for the pub. I am interested in the success of the talking pelican however because, being a sad s*d I dragged my family around Edinburgh trying to find the first experimental installation. I failed to find it but was later directed to the installation at Inverness where we watched pedestrians literally jump when the broad Scottish voice boomed out that the traffic coming from Wharf Bridge had been given a red signal to stop. We noticed a number of pedestrians not pressing the button, possibly in fear of "the voice". Do you have any experience of that? Since then, they've flourished in Scotland and the current modular design is slick and miniscule. This first installation occurred over 20 years ago so the intransigence 'down south' is baffling. PS: I'll 'keep an eye out' for any suitable posts in sunny Scotland Peter - I'm basking in the sunshine up here! I believe there are many new facilities and innovations that could be implemented easily but bureaucracy is a far bigger hurdle than practicality... any jobs up there? :-) Peter Peter Jones Principal Traffic Systems Engineer Phone: +44 (0) 151 934 4254 Fax: +44 (0) 151 922 4514 Sefton MBC - UTC 3rd Floor Magdalen House 30 Trinity Road Bootle L20 3NJ >>> "Bernard Japs" <Bernie.Japs@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> 10/10/2007 10:52 >>> I'm surprised that 'bleep and sweep' facilities are still being considered by certain local authorities. I tested this type of pedestrian facility in Edinburgh about 15 years ago and the blind pedestrians, who used it, rejected the test facility. The popular choice at that time was the famous 'Talking Pelican Crossing' and 'tactile cones' were also favoured. The main point to note re 'bleep and sweep' is ambiguous audio signals are present - deflected by passing vehicles. Also it is a pity that Talking Pelican/Puffin facilities are still unrecognised in England. Do you not have a 'lobby group' to force such issues on your governing bodies? Bernie Japs CITY OF EDINBURGH COUNCIL=3D20 -----Original Message----- From: tcug-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:tcug-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Andrew Phipps Sent: 09 October 2007 17:47 To: tcug@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [TCUG] Bleep and Sweep I am being asked to investigate the use of Bleep and Sweep at an existing dual Pelican crossing, which currently has tactile devices, and having read TAL 4/91, this particular crossing can accommodate the signal. We currently do not have any sites with this type of signal installed, and therefore, I would welcome any feedback on any issues that may arise or have arisen when installing Bleep and Sweep.
