That's what my dilemma is, I had the pin pop out on my 77 last week and got
re-aquainted with the PITA procedure. The ball at the bottom of this shift rod
does not have one (never did) and I don't recall a slot in the bowl of the
front shift rod either.
Mike says his spins around freely as well so I'm thinking it was made that way?

Also how hard is it to replace the bushings and or bearings in the center pin
area? I drove it to the lake klast night and the handling is really scary. It
moves up and down when you move the wheel left or right... the Bus jumps
sidways when you hit a bump

#yiv84959395 p {margin:0;}I thought there is a alignment pin in the front of
the ball that fits in the front of the shift rod cup??

Yep, that one, there appears to be nothing to stop it from rotating around and
around which puts the "L" shaped extension on the end of the shift rod in
different locations depending on where it has rotated to when it comes time to
shift. Like hitting  the parcel tray or the seat cushion....

Are you tailing about up front? The shifter end sits in the front shift rod
like a ball and socket.

Once I get mine back I plan to install a gene berg shifter.

Sweet!  I'm sure I'll get pulled over one day. I was thinking when they see
seat belts in the front and not in the middle seat or rear they will hassle me
if anyone is riding back there.

Question about the shift rod: Is it supposed to swivel around like that? My Bay
has a "piston" that fits in a slot in the "bowl" of the rod under the floor but
the Splitty does not. It just spins around 360 degrees, this can't be normal
can it?

Just when I left the gas station I pulled up the the light and Sachse's only
motorcycle cop pull's up next to me and blows his horn.  I thought oh shit I'm
gonna get a ticket for something, just then he give's me the peace sign and
drives off.LOL

Yep I get that a lot with my Westy but I can see I will learn the true meaning
of the word patience with this one, I might just fill up my 5 gallon for a
while and avoid the gas stations all together..

Ya they drive like crap but, makes me look really good.

The first time I drove mine and pulled into the gas station it took me 20 min
to get out of there cause people kept talking to me , taking pictures, and
telling me their stories about a  VW bus.

2 things I noticed, It drives different than a Bay and people stare A LOT : )
I also discovered a great deal of half assery that needs to be addressed, but I
drove it none the less.
