We judge to the standard, so what is exceptional? Is it an animal that is exceptional enough to finish? The program needs a lot of thought. There is nothing, so far, that gives the judge any guidence. I guess "exceptional" is as good as anything. My understanding of exceptional is "above average". I doubt that is what the AKC had in mind. I know with "Select" it is to be a dog or bitch that could go Grand Victor or Grand Victrix at another National. As to Grand Champion, I guess it is just how generous the judge wants to be.
