Keith,
I would second Jerry in that the RolleiMagic is one of the if not the most 
undesirable of Rolleis. 

Sounds like the focusing hood was was changed with one from another camera. 

Secondly even if the meter is working, camera meters are too inacurate too slow 
to be used consistently used when compared with a hand held device. 

I hope you are able to resolve your situation quickly.

If you want my honest comment, you have been screwed.

First of all a RolleiMagic is useless because the meter is
almost certain to be dead. There is no manual function,
unless it is a Rolleimagic 2.

If you want to put it on your shelf for display, it is worth
about $200.

My suggestion is to give it back for a full refund
