I went both ways. But not to the 6000.
My first "real" camera was a Rolleicord in 1952, bought new from my
uncle's store for $100. I attended Brooks Institute of Photography
1959-1961. I bought a Hasselblad in 1962 when I started as a
commercial photographer.
I continued with Hasselblad through the years and now have a 203FE,
205FCC, SWC, FlexBody, and a myriad of CF, CFi, CFE, and FE lenses.
My current photographic endeavor is fine art, mostly landscape. I end
up using my FlexBody and 205 most of the time. But that is two
different systems to carry. And, the FlexBody is somewhat of a pain
(PITA) to use. It's Scheimpflug capabilities are outstanding. But it
is still a PITA to use. So I always switch to the 205 when I
photograph scenes that cannot tolerate Scheimpflug. For close-ups,
the FlexBody has 30+ mm of extension built-in, but still a PITA. So I
use extension tubes with my 205 instead.
A couple of years ago I discovered the Rollei SL66. The reason that I
new nothing about it was that my local professional distributor
(Keeble and Shuchat Photography), with whom I have close personal
ties, does not carry Rollei. Close ties in that the owner (Terry
Shuchat) and general manager (John Clifton) have been personal
friends since the 70's.
I read Barry Thornton's books "Elements" and "The Edge of Darkness",
and it finally sank in that I could replace my FlexBody with an SL66
and not have to carry two cameras when I was out shooting Scheimpflug
scenics. No matter where you are, there's always something other than
huge DOF scenics to photograph, and usually close-ups as well.
So, I found a one owner, very lightly used pristine SL66 in Germany,
plus four film backs, a prism, chimney, HFT lenses - 50, 80, 150, &
250, numerous bay VI filters - pola, infrared, red, yellow, and yellow-green.
Ain't eBay grand!
I ended up with an extra SL66 and lenses. The extra camera had a
broken shutter, locked-up mirror, and a stiff focus mechanism. The
film back on it had been hit on one corner. There was also an extra
50mm & 80mm lens in the deal. I sent it all to Harry Fleenor for a
complete checkout/overhaul and a Maxwell screen. I was notified last
Friday that it all was on its way back to me and in 100% functioning
condition. New shutter mechanism, mirror mechanism, and rebuilt focus
mechanism. The film back checked out 100% as well. The corner damage
is only cosmetic. The lenses checked out as well.
I will probably keep this kit as a spare. Or maybe not...
At sometime in the near future, I will sell my Hasselblad 203FE,
FlexBody, some lenses, and some extra film backs. Even at the lowest
eBay prices, I will recover all that I spent on all of my Rollei SL66
expenditures. My 205FCC and SWC are engineering marvels
(photographically) and will be used, not sold.
My SL66 lets me photograph Scheimpflug scenes, non-Scheimpflug
scenes, close-ups, and very close-ups, all with the same camera,
without any extra accessories.
Ain't Rollei grand!
:-)
