In high school, I learned out how to make plates for, and to operate a
photo-offset printing press. One of these.

Also, My great grandfather figured out how to make half-tone printing
plates from continuous (photographic) images with all the little dots.
So I wrote Max Levy & Company and they generously gave me two glass
ruled cross-line screens (a bit over 8" x 10" in size). They even had
correspondence in their files between my great grandfather and Max Levy.
I learned to make half-tone plates with these, and the process, once
understood, is very flexible. Contrast control is quite easy, as are
tricks like burning in the highlights (much easier than with regular
photographic negatives).
