With respect, I disagree it is that simple.
I am a computer scientist and engineer by profession and entirely
comfortable doing things on a computer up to and including writing
my own software.
But I find post processing digitally just as demanding as the darkroom,
just in different ways. Yes, digital makes fixing mistakes much easier,
and no, it's nowhere near as physically demanding as standing in a
darkroom. However, I find the aesthetic/interpretive process to be just
as tough. In some ways, I find digital to be even harder because you
have more limitations to work around. Diffraction sets in earlier,
the output media is nowhere near as rich as a silver print, the
dynamic range and tonal smoothness isn't as full (unless you're Bob Randall ;)
and so on.
As I've said elsewhere, I see digital evolving into an artform unto itself
having the same relationship to film that, say, film has to alt processes
like cyanotype.
