For this reason, I have never understood the concept of an incident meter. My camera never sees incident light, so like you I meter the reflected light that it actually does see. You have to make all these voodoo guesses to adjust the incident readings for the estimated lighting conditions or the estimated relative subject brightness, and I can do that with the sunny 16 rule and no meter at all.
