I've not owned an FG but I am somewhat familiar with the camera.
I believe that you would find the functions of either a FE, FE2 or FA to be
most similar to that of the FG. If you are looking for a durable all manual
camera I would look at the FM2n or if you want to spend the $$ a FM3a. Both
the FM2 and FM3 cameras have mechanical shutters and the ability to operate
at any speed without batteries... They are solidly built, but still small
in size relative to the F series cameras. I have had a pair of FM2n's for
about twenty years.
As someone before me mentioned - if you wear glasses - the F3HP will be hard
to beat. The HP Viewfinder is designed so that you can see the whole
focusing screen from about 1 inch away. Without the MD4 Motordrive the F3
is a fairly light weight camera. The F3 Stayed in production longer than
any other F series camera possibly longer than any other Nikon Camera but I
am not sure of that. It has the largest array of accessories of any of the
Nikons I resisted the F3 for a long time for two reasons. The Shutter
mounts in a funky manner on top of the film rewind knob, and the camera has
a linerally traveling shutter that dooms the camera to a flash synch speed
of only 1/80 sec. This makes the camera not a great choice when fill flash
in daylight condtions is necessary. I finally bout one to see what all the
fuss was about and promptly fell in love with it so much so that within a
month I had already bought another.
When SPEEDY does weddings he takes his F100 for most shooting, His F3 for
candids or maybe black and white if that has been ordered, and he has his
pair of FM2n's in the bag just in case of catastrophic failure of any of the
other cameras...
To answer your question: I don't believe that you coudl go wrong with any of
the cameras discussed above...
