With 'hard' filtration, pyro stain just acts as density.

With mixed hard + soft light, the pyro stain will pass (some) green which
will soften highlights.

In "Edge of Darkness" Barry Thornton shows an example of pyro (pyrogallol)
stain leading to dull highlights with VC paper. The effect varies with
paper type.

If you had a soft neg that required hard filtration, the effect would be less.

Pyrocatechol gives a stain colour which does this less, being more brown
rather than sort of olive green or khaki.
