Please clarify. Let's say I attend a press conference and record in PCM format at a sampling rate of 44.1. I use the Heading key to mark various passages that might be potential sound bites for my radio news feature. I was lead to believe that each resulting section becomes a separte .wav file in the PTR2, or rather, in my case, on the CF card. If this is so, can one also use the Page key with similar results? I would denote each speaker using the Heading key, and mark possible sound bites by each speaker with the Page key. Is this do-able?

Are you saying that when one cuts or joins sections or phrases in recorded files on the PTR2, there is no change in the underlying .wav (or MP3) files? Would the PTR2, therefore, be impractical for a blind radio journalist?

I gather, also, that it is not possible to time a section or page, but only either a Daisy title or a full CF card or CD. If so, that's really too bad. Given the inaccessibility of most CF recorders, I had hoped to be able to use the PTR2 instead of my minidisc recorder--which now forces me to dub all material in real time before editing it on the computer. I believe while some people may feel comfortable with memorizing menus, I resent having to muddle through using conventional CF recorders, while my sighted colleagues have all kinds of features at their disposal. That's why I was hoping to be able to take advantage of some of the PTR2's features, despite the fact that it is primarily a Daisy recorder.

Comments welcome from anyone on the list.

Judy,

Essentially if you use a blank data CD in your Plextalk or you are
recording to the CF card, you will end up with a DAISY recording. You
cannot record to a CD or CF card and end up with a purely MP3 recording
- it will always have DAISY files generated in addition to the audio
files. If you use a blank audio CD, you will end up with a standard
audio CD which you can use in the same manner that you could use a
purchased music CD. Remember, for all CDs, you will need to finalise
the CD prior to being able to access the files on another device.

However, if you are recording in a recording mode that is one of the MP3
formats, you should then be able to access the CD or CF card and lift
the MP3 files into the editing software. You shouldn't need to use the
PRS software.

Remember, if you are going to edit audio files from a CD , it will be
better to import them into your editing software first and do not try to
edit them on the PTR2. Editing on the PTR2 only gives the impression
that the original files have been edited (by use of the SMIL files to
control what is played) and does not alter the actual files on the CD.
The audio files on the CD do not get changed.

I hope this makes some sense.

Jamie

Hi,

I have looked at the web site and it's still not clear to me if I can
make a
normal straight mp3 recording without daisy structure and copy it from
the
card into goldWave or Sound Forge without using the plextalk software.
Has
anyone tried this with either model?

Judy who wwants to use it for broadcast interviews without worrying about daisy marks or structure.

Linda,

You can read more about the PTR2 at the following website:

http://www.plextalk.com/in/ptr2_top.html

In terms of the fast forward and rewind, I don't think that the speeds
are different but I have noticed that you sometimes need to press the
key more than once before it starts to respond.

I have also pasted below a section from the PTR2 manual that lists the
main differences between the PTR1 and the PTR2:

"5.3. Main differences between the PTR1 and PTR2.

Below are listed the main differences between the PLEXTALK PTR1 and the
PTR2. This is not an exhaustive list but should give the PTR1 user a
good idea of how the two recorders differ.

* The PTR2 now has a separate menu key, Separate volume up and
down keys and a relocated eject key.
* The new PLEXTALK has a modified body shape in durable plastic.
* The recording level, speed and tone control switches have been
moved to the right side of the unit
* The power switch has been moved to the right side of the unit
and can now be locked with the use of the key lock/key describer switch.
* The card slot has been moved to the front of the unit under the
CD drive and is now a CF card slot rather than a PCMCIA slot. A CF card
is provided with the unit.

* The microphone socket is now stereo rather than mono.
* Automatic gain control (AGC) is now available, if selected, for
use with the external microphone and the Line in options as well as the
built in microphone.
* The USB interface with a computer can now be used to directly
access the CD drive or the CF card.
* The forward and rewind keys can now be used to either skip
forward or back by phrases or by 5 second jumps according to the
selection made in the menu by the user.
* Groups can now be navigated independently or along with all
other structure, according to the selection made in the menu by the
user.
* In Normal mode, after the DAISY book plays to the end, the next
press of the Play key will start the book at the beginning again.
* The PTR2 has 2 modes of operation. These are Normal mode and
Book Creator mode. Normal mode provides a simplified method of
producing a DAISY recording. Book Creator mode gives the user access to
more advanced editing functions.
* In Normal mode, new recordings can only be appended to the end
of the existing recording - no option for insert, punch-in or overwrite
is provided.
* In Normal mode, editing options are much simpler with phrase
editing removed.
* Heading and page markers can now be positioned using 0.1 second
adjustments rather than 'attaching' them to specific phrases."

Hope this helps.

Jamie

The one thing that I was told that is different about PTR 2 is that the
built in mike is in sterio. I would like to know more about this
machine before I buy it. I hear that the rewind and fast forward are
slower is that true? Linda Reeder
